Wish List

Financially the Darlages are unable to afford most of the expensive equipment that would make caring for Hunter more comfortable for him and just a little easier for them. Medicaid doesn't cover things like an at-home therapy table to assist in taking care of Hunter’s personal hygiene, portable wheelchair ramps which would allow Hunter to be more easily mobile at home or a wheelchair accessible van to transport him more safely and comfortably. The Darlages are currently traveling approximately 500-750 miles each week for appointments to meet Hunter’s medical needs and it’s costing them a small fortune in gas just to get him back and forth. There simply aren't the funds to purchase the tools that would make all of their lives a little easier.

Hunter's Heroes would like to help the Darlage family have access to the educational, therapeutic and other tools that would enrich Hunter's life.  Hunter loves the outdoors and we'd also like to see him get a few of the things that would expand his mobility outdoors as well!

Glossary Of Terms Used On This Blog

Neutropenia

Neutropenia (noo-troe-PEE-nee-uh) is an abnormally low count of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that helps fight off infections, particularly those caused by bacteria and fungi. The lower your neutrophil count, the more vulnerable you are to infectious diseases. If you have severe neutropenia — fewer than about 500 cells per microliter of blood — bacteria normally present in your mouth and digestive tract can cause infections. Pyloric Stenosis

Pyloric stenosis is an uncommon condition affecting the opening (pylorus) between the stomach and small intestine in infants. The pylorus is a muscular valve that holds food in the stomach until it is ready for the next stage in the digestive process. In pyloric stenosis, the pylorus muscles thicken, blocking food from entering the baby's small intestine. Pyloric stenosis can lead to forceful vomiting, dehydration and weight loss. Babies with this condition may seem to always be hungry. Tethered Spinal Cord Syndrome

Tethered spinal cord syndrome is a neurological disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column.  Attachments may occur congenitally at the base of the spinal cord (conus medullaris) or they may develop near the site of an injury to the spinal cord.  These attachments cause an abnormal stretching of the spinal cord.  The course of the disorder is progressive. What Is Cerebral Palsy

Cerebral palsy is a disorder of movement, muscle tone or posture that is caused by injury or abnormal development in the immature brain, most often before birth.
Signs and symptoms appear during infancy or preschool years. In general, cerebral palsy causes impaired movement associated with exaggerated reflexes or rigidity of the limbs and trunk, abnormal posture, involuntary movements, unsteadiness of walking, or some combination of these. The effect of cerebral palsy on functional abilities varies greatly.
People with cerebral palsy often have other conditions related to developmental brain abnormalities, such as intellectual disabilities, vision and hearing problems, or seizures. A broad spectrum of treatments may help minimize the effect of cerebral palsy and improve a person's functional abilities.

All About Hunter

Coming soon!

The Darlage Family

These are Hunter, Braydon and Cheyenne's parents Monica and Brian.  They have been married for 16 year but together for 17 1/2. Truly warm and wonderful people that love their children more than anything else in this world. Now we know where Hunter gets that amazing smile from!
This is 20 year old Braydon, Hunter's big brother. Braydon is a high school graduate and has completed some classes at the local technical college. Currently he works at Walmart. He loves computers and is the family's resident tech wizard! Braydons hobbies are music, xbox, singing and dancing, and computers. He also happens to have autism.

This is Cheyenne, Hunter's big sister. Inspired by her little brothers, Cheyenne is currently enrolled in nursing school. Like many young ladies her hobbies are music, attending concerts, reading, sports, and shopping. She is engaged to a wonderful young man and they have plans to marry in the next few years.

This is Michael, Cheyenne's fiance. Like Cheyenne he was inspired by Hunter and is about to embark on his freshman year to become a physical therapist. Hunter's mom tells us that Michael spoils Hunter and that he eat up every minute of it!

Who Are Hunter's Heroes?

The Original Hunter's Heroes team! From L to R: Braydon, Monica, Brian and Cheyenne. Second row: Hunter, Benny and Michael Sullivan.

My name is Michael Sullivan. I am currently engaged to Cheyenne Howard, the sister of Hunter Darlage. Cheyenne and I have been together for over three years, which has given me plenty of time to get to know Hunter and become his brother.

Last summer Hunter underwent a serious surgery on his hips. The surgery, in medical terms, is called a triple osteotomy. Hunter was in the hospital for nine days in which none of his family left his bedside, including me. Throughout these nine days our family met with numerous doctors, nurses and other medical staff. Monica and I would occasionally take a break to get out of the room and clear our minds. We were discussing how hard this point in Hunter’s life was going to be. This family had no help and money was wearing thin. This is what led me to come up with idea for Hunter’s Heroes.

I started Hunter’s Heroes as a way to show the family that there are people willing to help. The intention of this fundraiser was to raise enough money to afford a golf cart, one of Hunter’s greatest desires. We began selling adult and children’s t-shirts and hats. At first, the orders came flying off the shelves. Cheyenne and I would meet, almost every weekend over the summer, with people to collect their money and deliver their shirt. We live in Indianapolis and when school started back up, we made a trip down every weekend to make sure that all the shirts got to everyone who ordered one. After weeks of this routine, people stopped coming to donate and pick up their shirts. It was hard to see this cause fall through. We kept the shirts in a tin and just started to hand them out for anyone who wanted one. We raised enough money to cover some gas for trips to and from Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital, but that was all. We still call ourselves Hunter’s Heroes and occasionally somebody in town wearing the shirt and it’s just a reminder of how much one child means to entire community.
